Christantus Uche Sparks Dominant Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden European adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Missing key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable win that virtually secures them a place in the Conference League playoffs.
Another victory in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be enough to secure straight passage to the last 16, especially after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This match provided a platform for some of Palace's fringe players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their league season were outmatched even for a largely rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Control Asserted from the Start
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close soon after, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee dismissed the protests.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were hanging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
